Chose Your Own Assignment(s)

Cover combination (4 stars)

I think it’s interesting to look at how the vocal and instrumental composotion changes the emotion of a song. For this assignment find a cover of a song and combine it with the original version of the song to create a new/remixed version of the song. After you’ve finshed remixing your version, listen to it and see what kind of emotion it now makes you feel.

For this assignment, I chose “No Freedom” by Dido and I supplemented it with the cover version performed by Miley Cyrus and Adam Sandler on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. I am a huge Miley Cyrus fan and I recently discovered this song while clicking video after video on YouTube. It easily got stuck in my head and this assignment forced me to listen to the original (which I like less, by the way). In relation to this course, I chose this song because I the title made me think of my semester-long reading, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood. The main character of this novel, Offred, literally has no freedom. After the assassination of the President of the United States, she lost all of her rights. Now, she is not only forced to live in a misogynistic society but lives under the groin of her Commander, Fred, where her only way to survive is to provide children to the Republic of Gilead.

My emotions when listening to this song are as following:

Cover: Yay!

Original: Eh. No thanks.

Combination: Cringeworthy

Music Mashup (4 stars)

Pick any two songs and combine them to make one song. Point out the differences between the two songs. Examples: gender singers, high vs. low voice, changes in volume, instrumentation etc.

The songs I picked for this assignment were “Bad and Boujee” by Migos and “I’m Better” by Missy Elliot. Though these two songs are in the same genre of popular hip-hop they do have differences between them. Migos is a group of three men from Atlanta and Missy Elliot is a female artist who sings solo. “Bad and Boujee” is a more upbeat song with lots energy. “I’m Better” has a very chill vibe and is a lot slower than Migos’ song; with a staccato beat in the background of the song rather than endless adverbs.
